Questions & Answers
What is the Potter's House Like?
The Potter’s House provides a safe, loving, warm, peaceful, Godly environment. We laugh together, cry together, pray together, play together, and worship together. We minister to the whole person, helping our ladies become the well-rounded women of God that He originally intended for them to be. We also prepare them to become productive members of our society, as well as to become good Mothers, wives, friends and citizens.
Our program consists of two phases. The first phase lasts 7 months. During this first phase, our ladies do not work. They receive intensive training in the Word of God. They have homework, reports on books of the Bible, reports on Christian books they read, and individual and group Bible studies. They are taught who they are in Christ and how to walk in victory over the world, the flesh and the devil. Our ministry could be considered a small Bible college.
The second phase of our program lasts 5 months. During this phase, our ladies have two options. They can remain at the Potter's House, or at our other home for second phasers, get a job, and get on their feet. We will help them get their Driver's license, their GED's, a job, a vehicle, and whatever else they need in order to function properly in society.
The other option for a second phaser is to return home to their family. But, they must stay connected with the Potter's House. They have to either come back to spend every other weekend at the Potter's House or they have to come every day for group at 2:00. Graduation from the program is based upon their completion of both phases and their readiness to be on their own.
Our day begins at 5:45 A.M. The first hour is spent alone with the Lord, being quiet before Him and developing an intimate relationship with Him. At 7:00, the ladies have devotions with the housemother. They share, cry, laugh…and begin their day with joy. From 8-11, the ladies eat breakfast, get their showers and get dressed, and do daily chores. At 11:00, there is another Bible study. From 12:00 to 2:00, the ladies eat lunch, do homework, and have another 45 minutes of quiet time with the Lord. From 2:00 to 4:00, the founder, Cherrie Burdeshaw, comes over and teaches the Word of God. She teaches them the Word from one end of the Bible to the other. After 4:00, the ladies are free to walk, go to the gym and work out, do homework, or whatever until dinner. After dinner, it varies from day to day: anywhere from doing nails and hair to having a ladies’ group over for food and fellowship. Then, from 8:30 to 9:30, the ladies spend another hour alone with the Lord. Lights are out at 10:00.
You must be between the ages of 25-45. We do not allow any medications, other than those for physical problems, such as high blood pressure. We do not take anyone with a medical condition that requires treatment by a doctor, as we are not equipped to handle medical problems.
The first step if you meet the above requirements is to fill out an application and set up a face to face interview. The main requirement for entrance into the Potter’s House family is the desire for a complete and total life. Our home is for broken and discouraged ladies who are sick of their old lives and are willing to do whatever it takes to change. We do not allow bad or negative attitudes.
For application please email phw@bellsouth.net.
*We reserve the right to deny any applicant into the program.
There is no cost. However, we ask for a $200 donation up front. After that, we ask for a $100 a month donation if the families are willing to do so. Considering that the cost to house and feed each girl runs about $600-$700 per month, this is a small donation to give.
We do not turn anyone away because of a lack of funds. We want to offer help to all who truly want a new life, lived with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Yes, we do have a waiting list. However, that can change from day to day. Some ladies change their minds, some get into other programs, and some go back to their old ways, so our waiting list is always changing. It could be from a few days to a few months. It is best to call for an interview; if we cannot take you, we will give you a list of other programs.
We have a doctor who will see our ladies free for routine problems, such as bronchitis, etc. We have a medical clinic at Rock Springs where our ladies can be treated...but only for routine, minor problems. We also have two dentists that see our ladies and offer their services for free. We have a lady who owns a beauty salon that will do a free makeover that is unbelievable! We have another lady who does hair coloring for free and another lady who does haircuts. We are very fortunate to have a personal trainer who comes every Wednesday and teaches our ladies proper exercise and nutrition.
We have no state or federal funding and no grants. We operate totally by faith. A small portion of our funds come from family members. Most of it comes through churches and women’s groups that are involved with us and give very generously and unselfishly to meet the needs at the Potter’s House. When the Lord started this ministry through me, He put on my heart that God's people should take care of God's business....and they have! Praise Him for it all!
The success rate is unbelievable. None of our girls want to leave. In fact, many of them stay involved on an ongoing basis. The ladies will all tell you that this is their new family, one that they want to be a part of for the rest of their lives. We develop such close bonds and see such awesome moves of God that everyone wants to remain as part of the ministry. We see our ladies get their GED’s, get good jobs, get vehicles, and get stable homes. We have a lot of ladies that go to college or technical school after graduating from the Potter’s House.
